세계평화축전, 임진각 평화누리
뻥튀기 차량, 위장막, 스티커, 우산봉투, 뻥튀기
광복 60주년을 맞이하여 세계평화를 염원하는 40일간의 행사가 펼쳐진 가운데 임진각에서는 8월15일 ‘머리에 꽃을’이라는 락콘서트가 기획되었다. 우리는 이 공연의 아트 디렉팅을 맡아서 브이제잉과 포스터 제작 그리고 몇 가지 이벤트를 펼쳤다. 그 중 ‘폭력은 뻥 이요’라는 퍼포먼스는 위장막으로 뻥튀기 차량을 꾸미고 군인 모자를 쓰고, 무기를 연상시킬 수 있는 형태의 우산봉투에 100킬로그램의 쌀을 그 자리에서 뻥튀기해서 창전(?)한 다음 공연 중간에 무기 대신 나누어주는 일이었다. 뻥튀기 기계의 대포모형과 뻥튀기가 충분히 가열되었을 때에 외쳐지는 아저씨의 ‘뻥이요’라는 소리, 그 소리에 귀를 막고 기다리던 어린 시절의 추억들이 전쟁과 반전되어 작용할 수 있도록 고안한 퍼포먼스였다. 자원봉사자들이 ‘폭력은 뻥 이요’를 외치며 ‘뻥튀기 기관총들’을 짊어지고 관객석으로 들어서자마자 공연장은 한순간에 아수라장으로 변했고 평화롭게 공연을 지켜보던 관객들은 노아의 방주에서 구원받았던 짐승들의 모습으로 돌아왔다.

World Peace Festival 2005: Beyond the DMZ

Rice-popper truk camouflaged, sicker, umbrella bags
On 15 August, a rock concert entitled Flower in your Fair was given as a part of the forty-day festival for world peace to commemorate the sixth year of Korean liberation. Working as art director of this concert, we planned several events including VJing and poster production. Among them, the performance Violence BBeong-Yi-Yo(meaning “popping”, a Korean slang term for falsehood) was to produce 100Kg of pop rice with a rice-popper camouflaged with close in the concert field, those who wore military hats charged(?) umbrella bags resembling weapons with pop rice, distributing them to the audience instead of real weapons. This performance was designed for the counteraction between war and the childhood memories like the gun-shaped over rice-popper, the shout of “BBeong-yi-yo” that the pop-rice man gave when the machine was heated up sufficiently, and the moment where children waited for the machine’s popping with closed ears after hearing his yell.
Immediately after the volunteer performers jumped into the audience, shouldering the pop-rice machine guns and crying “BBeong-yi-yo”, the whole seats turned to pandemonium. People who were peacefully watching the concert returned to the animals which were saved in Noah’s ark……
