국제 호출 주파수
혼자 서있어도 이 노래를 부를 수 있다면 좋겠다. 어디선가 이 노래가 나즈막히 들리면 추방된 사람들을 아파하는 마음으로 누군가 신호를 보내는 것일까. 누군가 떠나야 했고 두려워하지 않기 위해 이 노래를 부르는 것이 될 수 있을까.
우리는 어쩌면 모두 잠재적으로 앞으로 추방될 혹은 이미 추방된 세대이자 그런 시대에 살고 있는지도 모른다. 이 노래를 작곡한 이민휘는 '무키무키만만수'의 멤버이다. 이 밴드는 제주도 강정에서, 85호 크레인 앞에서, 카페 마리 등 저항의 현장에서 새로운 형식으로 노래한다. 나는 현장에 함께 하지 못하고 그들은 무조건 갔다. 나는 군집한 신체에서 두려움을 느끼는데 그들은 스스로를 자칭 ‘잉여’라고 부르며 또 다른 연대의 가능성을 보여준다. 나는 무력감에 슬픔으로 연대할 뿐인데 이민휘의 세대는 21세기 잉여 투기자본에 맞서 잉여 세대가 저항하는 방법이 ‘권력도 뺏을 수 없는 즐거움’이란 것을 보여준다. 이 노래는 또 다른 저항의 패러다임을 만들어가는 그들을 보면서 느낀 연민과 신기함, 지속적 연대를 상상하면서 만들었고 퍼포먼스를 시작했다.
화려한 촬영 장비도 없이 최고의 스타들도 없이, 나지막하게 때로는 깡총거리는 토끼처럼 신나게 불러 볼 이 투쟁가는 특정국가의 언어로 된 가사가 없다. 파괴와 폭력의 현장에서 버텨 줄 수 없었던 미안한 마음이 이 멜로디를 흥얼거리면 서로 멀리 떨어져 있어도 서로의 슬픔을 알아주고 주저앉지 않는 용기를 불러내는 것과 같았으면 좋겠다. 그렇게 누구나 개발과 이윤을 찬양할 때, 세계 모든 곳의 쫓겨나는 소수들과 사라지는 장소들에 대한 또 다른 연대 형식이 되면 좋겠다.
각각 흩어져 서 있지만 전광판 시계를 신호로 삼아 가슴으로 삼박자를 세며 누구는 큰 목소리로 그렇치 못한 사람은 콧소리로 함께 노래를 부르는 사람들이 보이는가. 거리는 영원한 플래쉬 몹처럼 다치기 쉬운 존재들이 최대의 분노를 비밀스레 나누어 간직한 모습이다. 사람들은 아직 발화하지 못한 최선의 용기와 사랑을 간직한 존재들이다. 그래서 국제 호출 주파수를 부르면 잠정적 노동조합의 외침이 된다.

International Calling Frequency
is a performance with a sound piece composed in collaboration with Minwhee Lee. The song is inspired by the Internationale, the socialist/communist/social-democratic/anarchist anthem which gained particular notoriety under the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1944. In contrast with the original song, International Calling Frequency is without lyrics. It distances itself from a political discourse, yet performs a reinterpretation of its politicised content through the actors’ humming of the Internationale’s tune. On location square at time, the performers gather and situate themselves at a 20m distance from each other, which represents the legal distance for a un-declared protest in Korea. Disassociating itself from a call for a protest gathering, and closer in structure to a ritornello, the humming resonates in one’s mind and brings people together through collective memory.

The Guideline for International Calling Frequency
1. The intention is to pay tribute to abandoned sites and to those who have been expelled from any given situation.
2. Learn this song first by watching the video or the score posted online.
3. Fix and announce the time and place for the performance using Social Network Sites and other online means.
4. Once on site, do not gather in a cluster but stand apart from each other.
5. This song/performance aims to create a landscape of belief that ‘we’ sing together though you are singing alone in your spot.
6. This can be performed with or without instruments and is always on a voluntary basis.
7. All different interpretations of the original song are welcome and invited.
8. Among the participants, one person must give the sign to start.
9. Similar to a sinking ship sending out an SOS signal, this song is a calling frequency sent out to a world dreamed of. The song begins with humming, and has no written lyrics in a specific language.
10. In performing this song, it is highly recommended to write your own lyrics to it.
11. When the song is heard, it functions as a signal to comfort and encourage those who have been expelled. Layoffs due to discrimination become more and more common and as a result, we start to lose hope. While Neoliberalism tramples on our sense for compassion and memory, we sing to express our contempt.
