Interview, APAP [Cotton Candy Ministry], Jangun Kim

Jang Un Kim : “Cotton Candy Ministry” could be interpreted diversely in general, such as fragile and solid, sweet and fatal. Explain this project for us.

Minouk Lim : I was commissioned to create a temporary project by APAP and it was an idea propositioned by focusing on the temporariness. I visited Anyang Central Park and thought about the temporariness as an alternative possibility of the public art project. From the point of describing the time and space of an event like a festival, I wanted to divert the dimension of the public into a concrete yet a relationship of a temporary meeting, like the moment when meeting a person to immediately fall in love. The formative object is confronted at the time of taking a walk in the park. The “honorable treatment” about the public arts, as far as my understanding goes, was not how a meeting and parting with a stranger takes place and creative formativeness and permanence, but rather, I wanted to propose it as the story uniquely carved or to be carved in each person, although taking in a form of a conception. Cotton candy which is directly related appears in parks or festivals without fail. No matter whether they are lovers or children, people willingly break down their boundaries or self-control towards the extremely simple taste and the swelled-up shapes. The way of existence of the cotton candy appearing and disappearing as well as the method of consumption itself containing stories were quite interesting.

JUK : You hesitated to produce and install “Cotton Candy Ministry” after you proposed it as a temporary project. Were there any particular reason?

ML : Wasn’t everything needed to be completed within an extremely short span of time? I began to have second thoughts about the limitations about the planning of the public arts project, the limitations of the system, as well as the democratic expression being included in the work itself. To put it concisely, it was same as falling in love and having to come out of the relationship after realizing that it would be unrequited love. It was same as trying to put a balloon on the needlepoint. Since I know the limitation of my work, I have no qualms about criticizing myself. My work always reveals latent failure.

JUK : Explain the connection between “Cotton Candy Ministry” as an installed formative object and the performance which took place on the opening day.

ML : There was no particular connection since I regarded the public arts project as a festival concept and thought my performance as something akin to a ceremony by a cheerleader prior to the main event. Also, the performance originated from a question, “How can a formative object be physically ‘absorbed’?” But upon looking back at the unexpected circumstances occurring during the performance, the connection between the performance, “Cotton Candy Ministry” and the installation was revealed.

JUK : It was the first outdoor project. However, there were many complications during production and installation of the work. I am curious as to what you would have thought during the process.

ML : It gave me an opportunity to realize the contradiction of the limitations of comparing certain formative objects. A question still remains about letting the artwork exist while commonly sharing a metaphor with the ramifications removed. It is connected to the question about the traits of the public. When taking into consideration the piling up of tension and misunderstanding from the conflicts with the production companies and the aesthetic transformation levied upon the artwork from the initial stages of the production to the installation by the standard as the public space, a thought occurred to me is; during this procedure the public art turns into a necessary absence of artistry and startles all the flaneurs.
