2021 Title Match
Minouk Lim vs. Young Gyu Jang
Night Shift

Introduction
Beck Jee-sook
Director, Seoul Museum of Art

As an annual exhibition representative of Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, Title Match was first launched in 2014 with a two-person exhibition format. It invited a veteran figure of Korean art alongside a prominent contemporary artist from the next generation. Beginning in 2018, marking the museum’s fifth anniversary, Title Match took on a parallel format, forgoing the generational distinction and instead introducing two contemporaneous artists pursuing dissimilar artistic media, directions, and identities. In 2020, the project invited an artist and an art theorist to transform the format once again, taking into consideration the changing times and emphasizing its role as a communicative and collaborative event.
Then, in 2021, Title Match brought together artist Minouk Lim and musician Young Gyu Jang under the title Night Shift. Here, the word “shift” serves as more than a title, taking the format of the exhibition—which started out as a competition and evolved into a communicative and collaborative process—to another dimension. “Shifts,” as a widely used system of labor in which multiple personnel inhabit a single space at different times, differ from “replacements” in that the former is a process of familiarizing oneself with the principles of circulation and sharing. Shifts define standardized labor, calculated in units of time, and also serve as a tool to highlight the intersection of time, the “threshold” or the “end of the shift” that workers eagerly await. This is perhaps why we find ourselves obstinately trying to identify where one shift ends and the other begins as we explore Lim’s visual works and Jang’s audio works across the lower and upper floors of the exhibition space. As is the case in human perception, vision and hearing rarely operate separately when we perceive the world around us. However, one sense tends to be amplified when trying to overcome a certain threshold of disability. In this sense, Lim and Jang’s exhibition seems to present cut-up and sampled fragments of today’s standardized experience of an exhibition, proposing a reconstructive principle out of a few standout scenes.
“Night Shift” is also the title of a number in the 1978 musical Light of a Factory by Min-Gi Kim, a bleak time towards the end of the Yushin Regime. The methodology for this exhibition is said to have been conceived when Lim agreed to film Jang’s band Leenalchi reproduce the song “Night Shift” for a tribute album dedicated to Min-Gi Kim. In the late 1970s, Light of a Factory was illicitly copied onto some 20,000 cassette tapes to be distributed around the globe. The musical, which encouraged laborers working in poor conditions to not lose hope and take charge of their destiny, was like a tiny star that became a beacon of light for workers enduring that pitch-dark period in history. Decades later, in autumn 2021, amidst a seemingly endless pandemic, Lim and Jang re-introduced this song in the exhibition space. Hence, this exhibition, rather than as a hymn for night shifts themselves, should be taken as a song sung in rounds, requested in memory of the nights spent in shifts and the starry skies in between.
