6월 코모에서는 《임민욱_미열이 전하는 바람(Minouk Lim: Longing for Slight Fever)》전을 선보입니다. 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 장르를 통해 개인과 공동체의 문제, 재개발 이슈 등 다양한 사회적 문제를 지속적으로 다루어 온 임민욱 작가는 사람의 체온이나 사물의 열기와 같은 ‘온도’에 주목한 작품들을 통해 일상적 시각에 치우친 우리의 인식을 새롭게 일깨우고, 삭막한 도시에 따뜻한 온기를 불어넣습니다.
임민욱 작가는 공공장소에서 펼친 이전 퍼포먼스를 토대로 완성한 영상 <불의 절벽 3_미네아폴리스>(2013)를 통해 몸의 움직임이 공간에 남기는 온도를 표현하고자 합니다. 사람들이 동일한 수준으로 경험하는 체온에서 모두가 공유하는 동질감을 발견한 작가는 특히 36.5℃에서 37.5℃ 사이의 미열이 갖는 특징과 감수성에 주목합니다. 작가는 몸이 심하게 아픈 상태에 나는 고열과 달리 미열은 무엇인가를 열망하거나 그리워할 때, 혹은 열중할 때의 감정을 연상시킨다고 말합니다. 공간 속 사람들은 벽을 어루만지기도 하고 바닥과 한 몸이 되어 뒹구르기도 하며 또한 성지를 순례하는 듯한 태도로 걷는 등 다양한 모습들로 등장합니다. 이러한 움직임의 과정들은 열로 감지되어 적외선 카메라로 기록됩니다. 급속한 근대화, 개발과 같은 경제논리들에 의해 하루 아침에 사라지고, 새로운 건물로 채워질 공간들에 마치 잔상처럼 남은 사람들의 ‘미열’은 잊혀진 것들을 다시 회복하려는 열망이나 바람과 연결됩니다.
또한 코모를 통해 새롭게 선보이는 비디오 <영도의 영원(0℃ of Eternity)>(2013)에서는 프랑스 상징주의를 대표하는 아르튀르 랭보(Jean-Arthur Rimbau)의 시(詩) 영원(L'Eternité)의 구절이 등장합니다. 작가는 자신에게 영감을 준 이 시의 한 자 한 자를 뜨거운 물로 써내려 가고, 물의 온도에 따라 식어가는 순서를 달리하는 과정을 열감지 카메라로 담아냅니다. 뜨거웠던 물의 흔적, 즉 시의 구절들이 시간의 흐름에 따라 천천히 사라지는 모습은 ‘영원성’을 주제로 한 랭보의 시에 대한 역설적 접근을 통해 ‘영원’의 또 다른 해석을 보여줍니다.
COMO introduces 《Minouk Lim: Longing for Slight Fever》 for its monthly presentation of an artist for June 2013. Minouk Lim has been working in diverse genres such as video, installation and performance, addressing a wide spectrum of social issues that include the problematic relationship between disparition of community and individuals. Creating works that focuses on ‘temperature’ which is manifested in the temperature of the human body or the heat that remains in objects, Lim awakens our mundane perspective and brings warm energy to desolate city.
For COMO, the artist presents 〈FireCliff3 _ Minneapolis〉(2013), a video based on her previous performance piece in public spaces. The work expresses the heat that is left by movements of bodies. Lim finds a shared sense of belonging in the body temperature that people experience in the same degree. She especially takes notice on the characteristics and emotional qualities of ‘slight fever’, which she defines as a body temperature between 36.5℃ and 37.5℃. According to the artist, slight fever reminds of emotion of yearning or missing something or that of being absorbed into certain things. In the work, people are manifested in diverse figures in a certain space: They touch walls, roll themselves on the floor as if they are part of it, and walk around as if to be on a pilgrimage to sacred places. These movements are then sensed through their heat and recorded by an infrared camera. Through this, the ‘slight fever’ of people connects to a longing or a wish to restore things that are forgotten – it is left as if it is an afterimage in a space that is to be abruptly disappeared upon economic logic such as radical modernization and development and be filled with new buildings.
In addition to 〈FireCliff3 _ Minneapolis〉, Lim presents 〈0℃ of Eternity〉(2013), a work inspired by Jean-Arthur Rimbaud’s poem “L’Eternité” and features lines from the very poem in Lim’s distinctive way of illustration. She writes the poem with hot water and captures the differing stages of the writing upon the change of temperature, using a thermal camera. The slow disappearing of the traces of hot water or the lines from the poem with the passage of time gives another interpretation of “L’Eternité” through Lim’s ironical approach toward Rimbaud’s poem on ‘eternity’.
